Oxfordshire: The Five Most Expensive Areas To Buy Property

Oxfordshire is generally considered an expensive county in the UK, with its abundance of countryside and pretty villages. It has three Areas of Outstanding Beauty in the county, namely the Cotswolds, the North Wessex Downs and the Chilterns. It also has the Thames flowing through the county.

In this article, we will look at the 5 most expensive places to buy property in Oxfordshire by looking at recent sales of 3 bedroom houses.


Making our top five is the market town of Thame, where a house on average will cost £350,000.

The town has good transport links especially to Oxford which is 9 miles away. You can also catch a train to both Birmingham Snow Hill and London Marylebone  from nearby Haddenham and Thame Parkway station.

The town as you may have guessed gets its name from the River Thames which flows next to it.


Number 4 of the most expensive areas is Wheatley , where a 3 bedroom house costs around £375,000.

People have been living here since Roman times and today it is a large village with a functional amount of shops and both a primary and a secondary school. There is no train station but it is close to the motorway. The village is about 5 miles east of Oxford.


Henley-on-Thames has always been considered posh and has house prices to match. A 3 bedroom house here on average costs £395,000.


To come to the above figure, sales of 3 bedroom houses were reviewed. But as Henley is upmarket, such houses on the market may be few and far between and often houses for sale are much larger and more expensive. Indeed a survey by Lloyds back in 2016 found that Henley was the 2nd most expensive market town in the country with an average price of all properties of £748,000.


The town is considered to have good schools, both public and independent and great sports facilities. It very famous for the annual rowing regatta which takes place on the Thames. The town also has excellent transport links with trains to London taking 45 minutes.


A little bit more expensive still is Charlbury, where a 3 bedroom property on average will set you back £400,000.

Charlbury is a small place but gets a lot of visitors, having a youth hostel in the town and a camp site nearby. It is very close to Blenheim Palace which was the birth place of Winston Churchill.

It is also close to Wychwood Forest and the Cotswolds and has a population of around 2,830. It has its own railway station, although commuting into London is a 1 hour 40 minute journey.


The most expensive place to buy property and number 1 on our list is Burford. Here a 3 bedroom house will on average set you back north of £550,000.

Burford is considered to be a wonderful example of a Cotswold village, so much so that it attracts a large number of visitors each day. Therefore you may need to be accepting of crowds occasionally if you desire to live here. The medieval town is often referred to as the ‘gateway to the Cotswolds’ and has a population of only 3,200.

It has good schools and each year there is a procession down the high street with a dragon going to the primary school fete. In 2009 Burford was ranked 6th by Forbes in its list of “Europe’s Most Idyllic Places To Live”
